What date were the UK Census' taken on?

Census data is one of the main records we use when researching family history. It can be a great starting place to help you trace back your family. Generally the Census date for the UK was taken every 10 years from 1841 onwards. However, it can sometimes be useful to know the exact date that the census was taken on, in order to help pin point marriages, births and deaths. So here is a helpful list:-

The dates of the censuses were as follows:

  • 1841 – 6 June.

  • 1851 – 30 March.

  • 1861 – 7 April.

  • 1871 – 2 April.

  • 1881 – 3 April.

  • 1891 – 5 April.

  • 1901 – 31 March.

  • 1911 – 2 April.
